Electricity Rationing Hits Abuja as Major Infrastructure Project Begins

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced the commencement of power rationing for customers of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) in parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The exercise, which will run from January 6 to January 20, is attributed to the relocation of transmission towers to facilitate the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA)’s road dualization project along the Apo axis.

In a statement issued on Saturday, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Mrs. Ndidi Mbah, explained that the relocation involves dismantling and reconstructing eight 132kV and 33kV towers along the Kukwaba/Apo 132kV line, situated on the Outer Southern Expressway route.

Areas to be affected during the power rationing period include Kubwa, Karu, Mararaba, Nyanya, Masaka, Keffi, Kukwaba, and Apo Mechanic Village. Additionally, parts of Lugbe, Trademore Estate, Pyakasa, Sabon Lugbe, Chika, and the Alaita axis will also experience disruptions.

“This relocation work will necessitate a planned power outage from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, starting January 6 through January 20. This will allow for the dismantling and construction of the transmission towers, as well as the restringing of power cables, enabling the resumption of bulk power supply to the Apo Transmission Substation from the Gwagwalada Substation,” Mbah stated.

She further assured affected customers that TCN is committed to restoring power supply as soon as the tower relocation and cable stringing activities are completed.

While apologizing for the inconvenience, Mbah emphasized the necessity of the project for the successful completion of the road dualization along the Apo axis.

It is worth noting that AEDC had earlier notified its customers of the impending power interruption across parts of its service areas between January 6 and January 21, aligning with TCN’s planned activities.
