Deforestation: 600 Firewood Trucks Flood Maiduguri Daily

0

The Borno State Government has expressed growing concern over the rapid depletion of forest resources, revealing that up to 600 trucks loaded with firewood enter Maiduguri every day.

Engr. Usman Aliyu, Director General of the Borno State Agency for the Great Green Wall, shared his observations over the weekend, noting the surge in tree felling due to both insurgent activities and local residents. “Along routes like Maiduguri-Bama and Damaturu-Kano, the influx is unprecedented, with around 100 trucks on each route daily,” he stated.

The ongoing conflict in the region has intensified deforestation as many locals turn to firewood and charcoal for survival, further exacerbating climate issues. Aliyu highlighted that security concerns have prevented access to farmlands, leading to widespread tree-cutting.

Governor Babagana Zulum’s administration has responded by initiating a massive reforestation effort, aiming to plant 15 million seedlings to counteract the environmental damage. However, the challenge lies in protecting these young trees. Aliyu emphasized the urgent need for collective action to combat climate change and preserve the region’s environment before it reaches a critical point.
