Breaking News: Kano Assembly Repeals Emirates Council Law.

The Kano state house of assembly has passed the Kano emirates council law (repeal bill) 2024. The bill scaled through third reading and was adopted when the assembly reconvened on Thursday morning.

The new law repeals the establishment of the 5 emirates in Kano state and all offices established under the old law have been set aside by the new bill, also all district heads elevated or appointed under the repealed law are to revert to their previous positions.

The now repealed law had established five distinct emirates; Kano, Bichi, Rano, Gaya and Karaye, with Kano and Karaye having eight local government areas of jurisdiction each, while Bichi and Gaya emirates share 9 local government areas of jurisdiction each, Rano Emirate enjoys jurisdiction over 10 local government areas out of the 44 local councils in the state. It also gave the governor and state assembly power to depose and/or promote/demote emirs if certain provisions are met.

However, there had been indications the law would be repealed when the present governor and the NNPP took office and won majority of seats in the state assembly with one lawmaker reportedly boasting “only God can stop this amendment.”

The bill now heads to the governor’s desk where he is expected to sign it into law.
