Blackout Hits Abuja as TCN Begins Maintenance Work

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced that ongoing maintenance work on key transmission facilities will disrupt power supply in parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) over the weekend.

In a statement released on Saturday, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, revealed that the maintenance would focus on two critical substations, resulting in temporary blackouts across several areas.

The first phase of the exercise, which began on Saturday, December 28, 2024, is centred on the Gwagwalada 330/132/33kV Transmission Substation. Engineers are performing upgrades on a 60MVA power transformer and its associated switchgear. The maintenance, scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., will temporarily interrupt electricity supply to Gwagwalada and nearby communities.

The second phase, slated for Sunday, December 29, 2024, will shift to the Kukwaba 132/33kV Transmission Substation. Work on another 60MVA power transformer at the facility will commence at 9 a.m. and is expected to last until 10 p.m. Areas to be affected include Wuye, EFCC, Federal Medical Centre, Coca-Cola, Idu Railway Station, Citec, and Life Camp.

Speaking on the planned outages, TCN emphasized the necessity of the operation to ensure the reliability and efficiency of the power grid.

“The Transmission Company of Nigeria notifies the public of planned maintenance at two major transmission substations. These upgrades are essential for improving the performance of our equipment and the stability of the electricity network,” the statement read.

While acknowledging the inconvenience caused, the company apologized for the disruption, particularly during the festive season, and assured the public of its commitment to minimizing the impact of the outages.

“Today’s maintenance at the Gwagwalada Substation will last only four hours. Tomorrow’s work at Kukwaba Substation is a more extensive operation that may lead to longer power interruptions in some areas,” the statement added.

TCN also explained that the timing of the maintenance was carefully planned to mitigate human and operational risks.

Residents in the affected areas are advised to take precautionary measures and make alternative arrangements during the scheduled outages.
