The Benue State Bureau of Livestock Development has confirmed a rabies outbreak in Kwande and Gboko Local Government Areas.

The Director General of the Bureau, Dr. Aondoakaa Asambe, revealed during a press briefing in Makurdi that the outbreak was first detected in Adikpo, Kwande LGA, after a dog bite incident involving several individuals. Investigations confirmed the infected dog was sold for processing before its head was tested at the National Veterinary Research Institute (NVRI) in Plateau State, where rabies was detected.

In response, the Bureau, alongside the One Health Development Initiative (OHDI) and other stakeholders, has launched an anti-rabies vaccination campaign. Ring vaccinations of dogs in Adikpo and mass vaccination efforts in Kwande and Gboko LGAs are underway to prevent further spread.

Dr. Asambe urged residents to report suspected rabies cases promptly and encouraged pet owners to vaccinate their animals. He also advised anyone bitten or scratched by a dog to seek immediate medical attention.

With over 55,000 annual deaths attributed to rabies globally, the Bureau remains committed to achieving a rabies-free Benue State by 2030.
