The Nigerian Army has warned civilians against wearing military uniforms, saying it is illegal and threatens national security.
Major General Gold Chibuisi, Chief of Civil-Military Affairs, gave the warning in Abuja during a meeting with defence correspondents. He said criminals often exploit military attire to commit crimes, making it harder to distinguish real soldiers.
“If you are not in the armed forces, wearing our uniform is a crime,” Chibuisi said, urging families to discourage their relatives from using military gear casually. He stressed that offenders risk arrest and prosecution.
He added that soldiers are trained to arrest, not harass, civilians caught wearing military uniforms.
“This is not America,” he said. “We have unique security challenges, and the military uniform must be respected.”
