In a tragic incident at an illegal mining site within the Gashaka-Gumti National Park, spanning Gashaka LGA in Taraba and Toungo LGA in Adamawa, at least 22 miners are feared dead after a mining pit collapse.
Adamu Jamtare, a local miner, disclosed that most victims hailed from Jamtare town. The Toungo LGA Chairman, Engineer Suleiman Toungo, confirmed the discovery of five bodies, though many more are believed to be trapped.
Despite patrols, illegal mining persists within the park, particularly at night. Adamawa Police spokesman, SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, reported ongoing efforts with the park authorities to curb these unregulated activities, which previously claimed around 70 lives last year.
