The Chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure, has stated that the party has no regrets zoning its presidential ticket to the South East during the 2023 general elections. He also praised the zone for its unity and “political maturity” during the last presidential poll.
Abure made these remarks while addressing party leaders from the zone at a rally in Abuja ahead of council elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). His comments were disclosed in a press statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh and made available on Sunday.
Abure said: “Before the 2023 general elections, I used to believe, erroneously, that the Igbos were not united. However, by the time Peter Obi joined the party and I had the privilege of campaigning for him across the wards and across Nigeria, I discovered that the Igbos are the most united, most formidable, most industrious, most hardworking, and most fearless. That is why today, I have no regrets that, in spite of all odds, we zoned the presidential ticket of our party to the South East.”
Abure expressed no regrets about zoning the presidential ticket to the region and emphasized that the arrangement was intended to serve as a vehicle to produce a President of Igbo extraction. He called on the zone to seek cooperation from other regions to achieve this goal.
“We decided that we were going to wipe away the tears of the Igbos, and we powerfully and courageously did that in the 2023 general elections. But I think that the Igbos must also go back to the drawing board. The Igbos need more realignment with other sections of the country,” Abure said.
Ifoh further revealed that Abure affirmed the opposition party’s readiness to produce a President from the South East in the future.
