Senegal and Mauritania have announced significant progress in their joint natural gas production efforts, marking a key milestone with the opening of the first well at the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) field located along their shared maritime border.

The GTA field, a collaborative project developed by British energy giant BP, American firm Kosmos Energy, Mauritania’s hydrocarbons company SMH, and Senegal’s state-owned Petrosen, is expected to produce approximately 2.5 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) annually.

Initially slated for production by late 2024, operations were delayed but are now back on track, with the two nations confirming the progress in a joint statement on Wednesday.

“The achievement of this important milestone marks a major step towards the completion of the GTA project,” the statement read.

The GTA field represents a significant development in West Africa’s energy sector, with its success promising to bolster the economies of both Senegal and Mauritania while enhancing their roles in the global LNG market.
