TikTok has deleted more than 3.6 million videos in Nigeria between January and March 2025 for violating its community guidelines—marking a 50% rise from the previous quarter.
In its Q1 2025 report, TikTok said 98.4% of the videos were removed before users reported them, while 92.1% were taken down within 24 hours. The platform linked the rise in removals to ongoing investments in detection tech and expert moderation.
Globally, TikTok removed over 211 million videos in the same period. Of these, more than 184 million were taken down using automation.
In West Africa, 129 accounts tied to covert operations were also taken down. Despite these numbers, TikTok said harmful content accounts for less than 1% of all uploads.
The platform also appointed Nigeria’s Dr Olawale Ogunlana as one of its digital well-being ambassadors.
