N50bn needed to complete National Library — FG

The Federal Government has approved the takeover of the financing of the National Library project by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund.

Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Sonny Echono, stated this yesterday when the Nigerian Library Association led by its president, Professor Innocent Ekoga, visited him.

He said the government was trying to reposition library services in the education sector for effective service delivery.

Echono, according to a statement by the spokesman of the ministry, Ben. Bem Goong, recalled that work on the National Library had been stalled for years due to inadequate funding.

He also said efforts to get the private sector to complete the project havd not yielded results.

Responding, Ekoga said completion of the National Library would bring honour and pride to all Nigerian librarians and provide the much needed reservoir for Nigerian researchers, students, and the generality of the reading public.

He said the visit also was for the investiture of the Service Award on the permanent secretary; the highest honour ever bestowed on a non-librarian by the association.
