Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in 19 Northern states says against the backdrop and the prevailing economic and security challenges, celebrating June 12 as Democracy Day makes no meaning to the Nigerian populace.
The group called on President Muhammadu Buhari to go beyond rhetoric and match his words with action by tackling the insecurity across the country and inspire confidence among Nigerians.
The Public Relations Officer of the association in the 19 Northern States, Reverend Jechonia Albert in a statement made available to newsmen in Kaduna on Monday said amid increasing insecurity, bad economy and undemocratic tendencies among the leaders, the excruciating pain and hardship Nigerians are facing, there was no reason to celebrate democracy day.
Albert said democracy is about recognising and guaranteeing the fundamental human rights of the citizens.
The reverend said Northern CAN was also concerned about the frequent attacks on schools and the abductions of students and pupils by bandits, especially, in states like Kaduna, Katsina, Zamfara and Niger.
He however appreciated the efforts of the security agencies to protect Nigerians in the face of the challenges.
