Demolished building kills one in Rivers

The ongoing demolition of buildings at Azikiwe Street near the popular Ikoku junction in Mile 2 axis of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has claimed one life.

The exercise is being carried out to pave way for the construction of the proposed Nkporlu Oroworukwo flyover in Port Harcourt.

An eyewitness account had it that the deceased met his death as he was scavenging for iron rod while the demolition of the one storey was going on yesterday.

The eyewitness  said that one of the big  pillars of building collapsed on the deceased as he made his way to scavenge iron while the entire building was falling apart.

The eyewitness called on the Rivers State Government to put safety signs in all the buildings marked for demolition to avert future occurrence.

Efforts made by our reporter to speak with the contractor on the incident proved abortive as the latter was not in the site.

The Rivers State Police Command Public Relations Officer, SP Nnmadi Omoni, could not confirm the story as of press time.

It would be recalled that Rivers State government had a couple of weeks ago directed occupants of buildings marked for demolition as a result of the proposed flyover to vacate the buildings as to enable the contractor awarded the contract embark on full demolition of the buildings affected by the proposed flyover.
