Two individuals, Olufunsho Dayo Chevy and Uwem Udo Nya, have been ordered by a Federal High Court in Calabar to pay a fine of ₦5 million each to the Federal Government after being convicted of oil theft.
The duo, alongside a vessel, MT New Angel, and a company, Edi Eurolink Distribution, were prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Uyo Zonal Command, for offences related to illegal dealings in petroleum products.
In a statement released on Friday, EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, confirmed that the suspects were apprehended by the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Victory and subsequently handed over to the EFCC on July 30, 2024.
The suspects pleaded guilty to a one-count charge of theft and engaging in unlicensed petroleum product dealings. Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu, presiding over the case, sentenced them accordingly.
