Constitutional review: Kano wants 13% derivation formula reduce to 8%

The Kano State Government has recommended that the 13% derivation formula should be reviewed downward to 8% to allow other states to derive more from the pool.

This was contained in a presentation made by the Kano State Government to the House of Representatives Special Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

While making the presentation, Secretary to Kano State Government, Usman Alhaji stated that Kano State with the highest population should be accorded preference on anything that relates to human development.

It also submitted that Kano being a Muslim dominated company required the Shari’ah Court of Appeal to exercise appellate and supervisory jurisdictions on criminal appeals from the Shari’ah courts in the state, so as to allow Muslim the right to practice and observe the principles of their religion as contemplated under section 38 of the constitution.
