BBC ‘Africa Eye’: UNILAG sacks 2 lecturers over sexual misconduct

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has dismissed two lecturers, Dr. Boniface Igbeneghu and Dr. Samuel Omoniyi Oladipo from its services over alleged sexual misconduct.

Igbeneghu of the Department of European Languages and Integration Studies, Faculty of Arts and Oladipo of the Department of Economics, Faculty of Social Sciences were relieved of their appointments as lecturers following their involvement in the sexual harassment of a female student.

The management of the University in a statement dated June 2, 2021 said that the Governing Council at its meeting on Monday considered the report and findings of the Senate Committee set up to investigate allegations of sexual harassment levelled against the duo in a British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) World Service Investigative Series titled ‘Africa Eye’, which centred on sexual harassment in tertiary institutions.

The Council consequently approved that the duo be dismissed from the services of the University for misconduct, with effect from May 31, 2021 in line with section 18 of the University of Lagos, Act 1967.

It also directed the management of the University to review the sexual harassment policy as may be necessary and institute effective strategies to prevent future occurrences.
