Akwa United have come out tops in the battle for the top position of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) with a 2-1 victory over second placed Nasarawa United in yesterday’s double header at the Nest of Champions in Uyo.
The ‘Promise keepers’ who are hunting for a maiden title went in search of an early goal but Ikechukwu Nwani missed a sitter from 10 yards in the 10th minute.
The ‘solid miners’ also responded immediately as they forced Akwa Utd keeper, Adewale Adeyinka to make a smart fingertip save to deny Silas Nwankwo.
However, in the 30th minute, the hosts broke the deadlock as Samuel Amadi curled in a freekick from 20 yards to put them ahead.
Towards the end of the half, Akwa doubled their lead with Marshall Johnson heading Etboy Akpan’s corner beyond the reach of goalkeeper Mohammed Galadima.
In the 77th minute, the visitors reduced the deficit when Adamu Hassan scored from the spot after Samson Gbadebo was adjudged to have fouled Dauda in the box.
Following this victory, Akwa United have restored their four points lead on the table while Nasarawa United and Kano Pillars stay second and third respectively on 52 points.
